  • Afrika Korps

Sent to bolster their beleaguered Italian allies facing the combined forces of the British Commonwealth in North Africa, the Deutsches Afrika Korps proved a dangerous opponent. Commanded by the legendary Erwin Rommel, the Afrika Korps fought a series of ferocious battles in Egypt and Libya as each side pushed the other to breaking point.

Fighting in what was referred to as the last 'Gentleman's War', the German soldier was well respected by those he faced, be they British, Australian, Indian or other nationalities. German tactics in the desert had a profound and deadly effect on how the British armour and infantry formations interacted with one another and these lessons were learnt for the later conflicts in North West Europe.

The Afrika Korps foot troops were more than ably supported by the dreaded '88' (8.8cm Flak) gun as a direct fire weapon and the ubiquitous Panzer IV was developed into what the British troops referred to as the 'Pz IV special' - a tank the British tank commanders learnt to fear and respect in equal measure. Battles at El Alamein, Tobruk and Gazala honed their fighting capability, pushing the British High Command into changes that would bring eventual victory in the desert campaign.

Supplied with a variety of headgear and weapon options Warlord Games' highly detailed and dynamically posed Afrika Korps are ideal for fighting in North Africa as well as into the Tunisian and the Italian campaigns.

    Afrika Korps set contains:

  • Blitzkrieg German Infantry plastic boxed set

Representing the classic image of the German infantryman during World War II, these miniatures are equipped with knee-high jackboots, unadorned 'coalscuttle' helmet and a martial discipline that took them to almost complete dominance of mainland Europe.

Whilst the glory often went to the armoured knights of the panzer divisions, the infantry were the spine of the Wehrmacht. Germany's cunning use of Blitzkrieg tactics conquered Poland, swept through the Low Countries and defeated France, before turning their attention to the Soviet Union. Soviet forces were pushed all the way to Moscow as the relentless march of Hitler's landsers swept all before them.

Well-led, superbly trained and equipped with the finest infantry weapons in the world, the German infantryman was a skilled and dangerous foe capable of thinking for themselves if needed, giving them a significant advantage over their foes. Vorwarts!

  • Blitzkrieg German LMG Teams (1939-42)

The physical weapon used by the German army in the light machine gun and medium machine gun role was actually the same – most commonly the MG34 (augmented by captured foreign weapons) or later, the MG42. To utilise these weapons in the medium machine gun role and take full advantage of their sustained fire capabilities and accuracy, a sturdy Schweres Machinengewehr tripod was required. However, for many squads these tripods were too cumbersome and so machine guns were used with a simple bipod, operated by small teams. Machine guns could also be used in the anti-aircraft role with the addition of a simple tripod stand made of three poles, allowing the weapon to be elevated high enough. The example given here is as used by Infanteriepanzerabwehrkompanien – machine guns used to defend anti-tank gun platoons.

Unlike other armies, the Germans used the same machine gun both as a squad weapon from its bipod and as a tripod-mounted support weapon. The tripod mount provided a much more stable firing platform and made it easier to keep up a sustained fire using a belt feed

Great Britain's armies had suffered cruelly at the hands of the ferocious Japanese assaults of 1941 and 1942, leading some to think of the simple Japanese soldier as an invincible foe in the steaming jungles of the Far East.

Brigadier Orde Wingate thought otherwise, organising long penetration columns of British, Indian and Burmese troops to plunge unsupported behind the Japanese lines and raise havoc on the road rail and supply trains.

Veterans are formed from the ferocity of war - these battle-hardened men are always ready to lay their lives for Mother Russia. Given the finest gear the land can offer, these veterans took the fight to the front to protect their homeland from the invaders.

If the Soviet army was not on the whole an elite fighting force, it certainly included its fair share of battle-hardened veterans. It was not uncommon for squads of hand-picked, decorated men to be assigned to particularly important objectives or critical areas where their greater experience would have the most impact.

These solid infantry will form a very themed backbone for your force. Being equiped either with a submachine gun or use their normal rifle, you can create multiple squads for all scenarios.

Formed around a core of Veteran Troops and armed with the new StG44, the Volksgrenadiers head to battle in defense of their homeland!

After suffering a double loss (both Army group Center in Operation Bagration, and the Fifth Panzer Army to the Allies in Normandy) the German Army created some 78 Volksgrenadier divisions from Autumn 1944 onwards.

Volksgrenadier divisions participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the defense of the Siegfried Line and Eastern Front, and in the final battles in Germany. Volksgrenadier divisions should not be confused with the Volkssturm, which is an entirely different, ill equiped, old, unfit, and young type of unit.

Several Volksgrenadier divisions, especially those made up of "jobless" Wehrmacht personnel drawn from the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe, displayed high motivation and morale which resulted in surprisingly good cohesion and military effectiveness against the combined Allied armies.

  • Bolt Action: British and Inter-Allied Commandos

The Commandos established an extraordinary reputation for dash and bravery in World War II. Formed in 1940 by order of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill with the express goal of taking the fight back to the apparently unstoppable German armed forces that had thrown the British Expeditionary Force out of France with such apparent ease. An all-volunteer force, they recruited from all parts of the armed services. Indeed there were Army commandos, Naval commandos and the Inter-Allied Commando regiment which included nationalities such as the Belgians, Polish, Dutch and others.

Commandos fought in campaigns in Europe, Burma, Africa and earned battle honours for many famous actions including arguably the greatest raid of all – St Nazaire.

Commandos were fielded in many different ways - from units of less than a full section up to full assault divisions depending on the task at hand. Superbly trained, aggressive in action, well-equipped and deadly in hand-to-hand combat the Commandos were rightly feared by their German, Italian and Japanese foes.

  • Bolt Action: Japanese Army Support Squad

The men of the Imperial Japanese Army were excellent soldiers, with extraordinary devotion to their country and their Emperor. Battle-hardened by years of war in Manchuria, the Japanese army was well-disciplined, led by seasoned officers, and watched over by the dreaded Kempei-tei political officers. Japanese soldiers gained an air of invincibility in the early years of the war as they conquered Thailand, British Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong, the Dutch East Indies, and most of the American Philippines.

Fanatical loyalty and iron discipline were the core of the Imperial Japanese Army ethos, and although it didn't have the same level of heavy weaponry and vehicles as their Allied opponents they were well supported by the likes of the Type 92 medium machine gun and Type 97 medium mortar.

    Contains these metal models:

    2 officers with pistol
    1 Kempei-tei with pistol
    1 medic
    1 radio operator/spotter
    1 medium mortar team
    1 MMG team

  • Bolt Action: Japanese Teishin Shudan Paratrooper Squad

Japanese paratroopers – Teishin Shudan (raiding group) – proved highly effective in the early years of the war. German successes with paratroops during 1940 encouraged the Japanese to develop their airborne arm as a constituent part of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF).

They were initially deployed in the Dutch East Indies during the Battle of Palambang in February 1942. A regiment of paratroopers dropped onto Palambang airfield, whilst another captured the town and its oil refinery. High casualties amongst the paratroopers discouraged further deployment by air, and the Teishin Shudan subsequently fought as elite infantry formations – much as their German counterparts did.

Possessing the same fanatical will as other Japanese forces and hardened by the rigours of combat behind enemy lines, the last time they made an airdrop was during an assault upon US air bases on Leyte. Most of the force was shot down before reaching its target. Although the 300 men who landed at Leyte caused considerable damage, the small force was soon contained and destroyed.

  • Bolt Action: MASH Unit

First established at the end of WWII, Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) provided treatment to a wounded soldier as quickly as possible, due to their close proximity to the frontlines. The appearance of the helicopter onto battlefields reduced the time from the actual wounding to getting the wounded soldier to a doctor or surgeon to just 30 minutes, greatly increasing their chances of survival.

The term MASH has been made famous in the movie and subsequent much-loved TV series M*A*S*H which depicts life at the fictional 4077th. These, in turn, were based on the 1968 book MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors by Richard Hooker (pen name of real life MASH surgeon H. Richard Hornberger) based on his experiences in the 8055th MASH in the Korean War.

Rules for using MASH units in your games of Bolt Action can be found in the Bolt Action: Korea supplement.

  • Bolt Action: North Korean LMG Squad

The forces of the KPA were vast, incorporating between 150,000 – 200,000 personnel, divided into 10 Infantry divisions, 1 Tank division, and 1 Air Force division. Although North Korean conscription was in effect before the outbreak of war, many young men were encouraged or pressed into service by their own families for the promise of financial reward. At the outbreak of the Korea war in 1950, the KPA were better prepared in every way for the coming conflict. Not only were they better trained and more favourably equipped, but earlier guerilla warfare in South Korea had also left ROKA forces little time to re-establish a strong military presence. As such, the initial attacks on June 25, 1950, were highly effective. The KPA foot soldier has long been celebrated for his ability to endure the worst the enemy, the harsh Korean climate, and the hardships his own superiors can throw at him. Modelled on the mechanized Soviet Army, sporting armaments supplied by Stalin and bolstered by veterans released from China, the KPA forces were considerably larger and more dangerous than the UN anticipated. KPA LMG Squad The basic KPA infantry squad consisted of ten men led by a sergeant and a junior sergeant (equivalent to a Corporal). Each squad included a light machine gun and required a second man to act as a loader. Typically the LMG would be the DP (Degtyaryov Pekhotny) machine gun, nicknamed the ‘record player’ for its distinctive round pan magazine. Contains 10 metal models
