16 x Late Roman Horse Cataphract figures We use the term Cataphract to describe a heavily armoured cavalrymen, covered from head to foot in armour of mail, scales and plates, sitting on a fully armoured horse. Scale armour was often of metal scales such as iron or bronze but could also be made of horn, bone or hardened leather which could be in various colours such as red and green. The horses often had an elaborate head piece to protect its face and a mesh to defend the eyes. These could be of various metals or leather. The first regiments of Cataphractarii were introduced by the Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd Century. We see a marked increase in Regiments of Cataphratarii in the Roman army from the reign of the Emperor Constantius II during the early to middle 4th Century as they came more and more into conflict with the Sassanid Persian empire who employed large numbers of Cataphracts and Clibanarii. Cataphracts would go into combat at the trot rather than the charge, as they were so heavy, charging would tire the horse out quickly. This also helped keep the advancing line steady for maximum impact of the long Kontos (lance) They would joust and fence with the long Kontos and revert to sword or axe when the Kontos broke. The are records of kontos blades decapitating heads with a thrust or a swipe! Infantry feared the Cataphract charge and had to form dense defensive blocks to prevent them breaking through. These fabulous figures can be made with either Kontos upright or Kontos levelled and have numerous head variants. The horses are in trotting poses and covered in wonderfully crisp scale armour with various head options. The whole effect will give you a varied and dynamic regiment of Cataphracts to strike fear into the opponents. What you get in the set 16 x Riders and horses |
12 x Late Roman Horse Archer figures 12 superbly detailed and animated models shooting to the front, side and rear representing the agility of these skilled mounted skirmishers. They come equipped with a powerful composite bow, bow case, arrow quiver, sword and small round shield strapped to their upper left arm. The Romans steadily increased the use of mounted horse archers in the army as they came into conflict with more and more Stepp nomad peoples who excelled with the use of the bow, as well as having to face the arrow storms of Sassanid Persian Horse archers. Many of the Roman horse archer units were recruited from the very enemies they had to face. The Notia Dignitatum a late Roman document listing the units of the Western and Eastern halves of the Empire lists nine units of light horse archers. There was probably a considerable amount more units in the Eastern Half of the Empire but the information is not as complete for this part of the Empire, but makes sense since most horse archer enemies were in the east. These miniatures don’t have to be restricted to just use as Late Romans. They can be used as Early Byzantines representing the men that fought for Belisarius against the Sassanids and the reconquest of Italy from the Goths. And they can be used as Palmyran horse archers. Palmyra was a client state of Rome based in Syria. They acted as a buffer state against the Sassanid Empire and scored a notable victory over the Sassanids under their king Odenathus. The Late Roman army was a fearsome foe. Its use of mixed arms, infantry and cavalry gave it flexibility and strength. PACK CONTENTS 12 riders and 12 horses |
12 x Late Roman Light Cavalry Figures Reinforce your army with these exceptional additions to our Late Roman range. Recruited from all over the Empire, North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Germania etc, some of these cavalrymen retained the distinctive national look such as the Equites Mauri Feroces “Ferocious Moors”! Or the Equites Mauri Alites “Swift Moors”! We have given these heads a North African look and given them a hairstyle very similar to the Numidians. A Medieval/Fantasy conversion sprue containing heads, cloaks and shields, for all your conversion desires! What you get : 2 x Sprues 62 x Heads 18 x Shields 12 x Cloaks By combining this set and the Victrix Medieval Knights set you can create, Teutonic Knights, later 13th century Knights, and Fantasy Knights! These heads have had many historical influences in their design and actually many have been based on existing Teutonic Knight helmet examples. They did have the wings and horns and Antlers surprisingly enough! I doubt historically these were used on the field of combat due to being a bit impractical but certainly would be used for ceremonial roles. They do look very cool however and nothing is stopping their use on 13th Century Teutonic knights as well as in a mean looking Fantasy knight role. There are some plain Great helms on the sprue without fancy adornments and if you just want a load of Great helms just snip the horns and wings off the helmets and you have a standard Great Helm to bring your Victrix knights into the later 13th century. We have also done a few very Fantasy inspired helmets with wings coming from the side, based on the Medieval Barbuta style helmet. Not only are there tons of heads on the sprues but we added some fantastic cloaks trimmed with animal fur collars and some new shields. |
We are really proud to be able to tell you or eagerly awaited Mounted Medieval Knights are here! On Friday we received frames of both horses and riders and what can we say but wow! I know we are biased as we make this stuff, but these are at the very top of what we have produced so far. From concept and research to the sculptors and the engineers and the tooling guys, everybody has been on their A game on this set of miniatures. The mail is the finest we have produced as it needed to work over the full legs and arms, but we still needed to keep it crisp and sharp which is exactly what we achieved. Movement and dynamism as well as accuracy and detail was a prime objective with this set. You can see from the leans in the saddle, to the raised and dipped shoulders wielding their variety of weapons, and their billowing surcoats and barding on the charging horses that this has been the end result. There is a massive choice of 18 heads in this set covering the varying and changing styles from the late 12th to the mid 13th Century. There are some open faced designs which then started to add the metal face guard and then to the completely enclosing barrel helms. Later Great helms and Sugar loaf helms will be covered in a later set. There are a variety of shield shapes, mostly heater style, both long and short, but also a teardrop option in there as this had not totally dropped out of use at this time. What do you get? 18 x Knights and fully barded horses 54 x Helmet heads 24 x shields 30 x lance arms with enough to make every figure with an upright or couched lance 12 x axe arms 6 x mace arms 18 x sword arms 33 x shield arms 18 x swords in scabbards 18 x horses (Transfers purchased separately) This set can be used as Knights and Men at arms that fought from the late 12th to mid 13th Century during the Crusades, the Barons War and the many conflicts that raged throughout Feudal Europe during this time of turmoil. |

Numidian Cavalry is a 12 miniature set packed with pose options and fantastic detail. The Numidians were from North Africa, around modern day Tunisia and Morocco. They were superb light cavalry and supplied large quantities of horsemen to their close neighbours the Carthaginians. Numidian cavalry excelled in skirmishing, hit and run tactics. They would shower their enemy with javelin fire and run away to avoid contact and then wheel around again to pelt the enemy with yet more missiles. They were often used as scouts and in pitched battles would outflank the enemy and wait in ambush. They fought brilliantly for Hannibal during the second Punic wars, being major factors in his defeats of the Romans at the Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae and they were also responsible for beating the Romans in Spain at the battles of Castulo and Ilorici under their charismatic and brilliant chieftan Masinissa. At the final Roman battle against Hannibal at Zama, some Numidians under Masanissa changed sides and fought for the Romans defeating their fellow Numidians under the leadership of the aged King Syphax. The Numidians helped swing the tide of battle to the Romans favour. Numidian cavalry fought as auxiliaries for Rome for many hundreds of years, they fought for Caesar and can be seen in evidence on Trajans column looking very much the same as they did during the Punic Wars. |

48 x Rus Infantry Figures from the 8th-9th century, (Can also be used as Varangian Guard). Historical Insight: The Rus, primarily Swedes from Scandinavia, ventured eastward during the 8th to 9th centuries. The Rus engaged in intense conflicts with neighbouring Slavic tribes and formidable steppe cultures like the Pechenegs, Bulgars, and Khazars.
