  • Marlborough's Wars Infantry of the Sun King

An army is also a symbol of their king, his prestige and majesty so it's only right that the King Louis' own army will be the most powerful within Europe to represent him as the most powerful king. His men will deliver the Spanish throne to him, no matter how many 'puny' countries band together to stop him.

Within this boxed set you will find all the parts necessary to recreate many of the units that fought to support the claim of Louis XIV. Each box is designed to allow you to create a 24 strong battalion consisting of 20 rank and file, two standard bearers, one drummer and one officer. The variety of heads allows you to re-create each nationality as well as allowing you to personalise your army and make each unit unique. The drummer has a mitre head or a tricorne, depending on the nationality of the regiment you are creating, whilst the Officer may have a sash to the side or front. He also has a choice of sword or pistol to lead his men against the Holy Roman Empire and their dastardly allies.

You will also find enclosed a selection of colours carried by King Louis' fores and his allies. Presented here are two French line regimental colours, one Bavarian regimental colour, and one colour of the "Wild Geese," Irish regiments in French service. Also included are the colours of the French Guards.

Also provided are head options, pouches and belly boxes to allow you to create a separate company of grenadiers to replace the line infantry. The headgear worn by the grenadiers often varied between nationalities, and sometimes between regiments, but those included here represent the most commonly used.

    Contains:

    24 plastic Allied Infantry:
20 musketeers (options to build four grenadiers).
4 command figures: officer, drummer and two ensigns.
4-page background and assembly guide including eight full-colour flags.

  • Marlborough's Wars Starter Army

Fought between 1701 and 1714, the War of the Spanish Succession began with a dispute between King Louis XIV of France and Emperor Leopold I of Austria about who should inherit the vacant throne of Spain. Before long a ‘Grand Alliance’ of countries, including the British, Dutch and some German states had entered the war to back the Austrians and oppose the ambitions of King Louis, the ‘Sun King’. This was one of the first truly global conflicts, being fought in Spain, Italy, Germany, the Low Countries and overseas in the New World, and involved all the major European powers of the day.

The plastic figures are from Warlords partnership with Wargames Factory and are superbly detailed.

This starter army is an ideal starting point for a new army or to add reinforcements to an existing force. Throughout the War of Spanish Succession the uniforms of the main protagonists on each side were largely the same with only the colour of the uniforms being the discerning factor. As such this set is just the job for French, British, Bavarian, Dutch, etc.

    Starter Army includes:

    96 multi-part plastic Marlburian Infantry
    12 multi-part plastic Marlburian Cavalry
3 multi-part plastic artillery pieces with 12 crew
    3 mounted officers
Banners for armies of the Sun King and the Grand Alliance

  • Married Zulu Impi

The Zulu army was a formidable foe. Well-trained, well-led, and well-equipped for campaigns, the Zulu regiments were the terror of Africa. Created by the great Shaka, founder of the nation, each regiment was composed of small companies who trained together, and a regiment could be 1,000 men strong. They were then brigaded together to form divisions that could move at great speed and with drilled precision, forming the classic Zulu attack formation of the Horns of the Buffalo.

The military system formed units into married and unmarried units, so a cadre of young men would be forced to remain unmarried on the King's orders until they had 'washed their spears' in the blood of their enemies. They are armed with throwing spears, smoothbore muskets and the deadly stabbing short spear whilst their patterned ox-hide shields help identify their parent regiment.

Once they were blooded, and only then, would they sew in the characteristic head ring which is the symbol of a mature and married warrior, showing his much enhanced status in society.

These then are the finest warriors of a fierce and proud army of 40,000 men, eager to preserve Zululand from all invaders, Swazi, Boer or British!

  • Napoleonic Belgian Line Infantry

The Dutch and Belgian contingents of the Waterloo campaign formed a third of the allied army, making the regiments vital to Wellington's success. The Iron Duke was uncertain of their fighting qualities at first as many of the soldiers in the regiments had been serving in La Grand Armée under the Corsican ogre, Bonaparte, just a year or so before! Wellington need not have feared as the Dutch and Belgian infantry broadly held firm despite massive attacks from the French columns, including repulsing an Old Guard attack at the end of a long and bloody day.

Box contains 24 Warlord Resin Belgian Line Infantry miniatures (includes command group of officer, drummer, ensign and NCO), full-colour flag sheet and plastic bases.

Although we know that it is unlikely Dutch and Belgian troops would have carried colours at Waterloo, we have included a full-colour flag sheet as we know wargamers love to see their units literally flying the flag.

  • Napoleonic British 95th Rifles - Chosen Men

The 95th Rifles were an elite unit of hard marching, sharp shooting light infantry that served in many bloody battles of the Napoleonic Wars. Unusually they did not wear the classic red coat of the British army, but instead a dark bottle green uniform which gave them their nickname of the ‘Sweeps’ or the ‘Grasshoppers’ by their French foes.

They were equipped with the Baker rifle – a supremely accurate weapon for the period – which would hit single targets at ranges unheard of for the smoothbore muskets which most other troops carried.

They earned a superb reputation in the Peninsular campaign and later at Waterloo, being battalions that Wellington could rely upon. To help maintain the effectiveness of the companies, reliable and trusted men would be issued with a white tape around the arm distinguishing them as ‘chosen men’ and expected to inspire the rank and file.

To make up for the short length of their rifles, they were issued with wicked looking sword bayonets, long enough to give a parity against an enemy bayonet.

  • Napoleonic British Line Infantry (Peninsular War)

Widely held as the finest body of fighting men to have fought under the Union flag, the British army in the Peninsular campaign tasted defeat but were far more often to be found savouring yet another victory over their old foe, the French.

Led by great commanders such as Moore, Crauford and Wellesley, the British army was a well-drilled and, on the whole, disciplined force that saw service on the Iberian Peninsula from 1808 until the end of the campaign in 1814.

The redcoated British foot regiments were ably supported by their Portugese, Spanish and German allies in addition to their countrymen in the cavalry and artillery. This multi-national force subjected defeat after defeat on Bonaparte's French, bringing such battle honours as Vitoria, Salamanca, Talavera, and the brutal siege of Badajoz into British military legend.

    Contains:

20 plastic easy-build British Line Infantry.
4 metal command miniatures: officer, drummer and two ensigns with wire flagpoles and finials.

  • Napoleonic British Line Infantry (Waterloo Campaign)

With the return of the French tyrant Napoleon Bonaparte from his exile on the island of Elba, Britain and her allies of the 7th Alliance once again prepared to face the might of the French Army in what would be known as the Hundred Days Campaign.

The rain-lashed weekend of 17th and 18th June 1815 saw the Allied forces end twenty years of continuous warfare – warfare that spanned the globe – in a series of violent and bloody battles at Quatre Bras, Ligny, Wavre and Waterloo.

At the decisive battle of Waterloo, redcoated British foot regiments, supported by their massed artillery and the noble cavalrymen, battled the rain and the mud as well as the hated French. Their Prussian Allies struggled to join with them, only reaching the fields of Waterloo late on Sunday 18th June.

Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, rooted his Allied army to the ridge at Waterloo for over nine hours as Bonaparte’s French threw everything at them. The steadfast British veterans of the Peninsular campaign served their King and country well once more and with the Prussians taking to the field before nightfall, the day was won for the Allies and the brilliant Bonaparte’s reign of terror was finally ended.

  • Napoleonic French Line Lancers

In 1809, at the battle of Wagram, some Polish light horse fighting for Napoleon seized lances from Austrian Uhlan prisoners and used them with good effect. Impressed by their use, Bonaparte ordered nine regiments to be formed, six of them clothed in green and three in blue. With their nine-foot ash pole lances, red and white pennants, and topped off with gleaming brass classical helmets they cut quite a dash on the battlefield. Lancers were unusual as they could take their place in the battleline and fight it out with enemy cavalry or infantry, but they were most often used in scouting, raiding, and – especially in Spain and Russia – in skirmishing, even fighting dismounted where the situation arose. Armed with a wicked lance, sabre, and at times a carbine and up to two pistols, the French line lancer was a formidable foe! This Warlord Games boxed set contains: 12 plastic easy-build French Light Cavalry Lancers. 1 additional metal officer and metal horse. 1 additional metal bugler. Optional metal arm for eagle bearer. Although a standard unit size for French Lancers would be 12 in most games, this box allows you to make 13 mounted French Lancers, giving you the choice of fielding them with or without command models.

  • Napoleonic French Old Guard Grenadiers

There are few soldiers more famous than the Grenadiers of the Old Guard, veteran soldiers of many campaigns who would literally give their lives for their Emperor if needed.

Formed from the Consular Guards in 1804, they were the elite of an elite, each man hand-picked for his height and military bearing. They proudly grew fierce moustaches, powdered their pigtailed hair, and wore gold earrings which gave them a glamorous if wild countenance.

These loyal soldiers served their Emperor well and earned their nickname ‘Les Grognards’ (grumblers) as they marched all over Europe, smashing France’s foes on battlefield after battlefield.

They were finally defeated in the savage fighting at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Much of their action at this battle was hand-to-hand against Prussian troops and British firepower under the darkening skies. Such was their reputation and prowess in battle that they left a fighting legacy none could match.

This Warlord Games boxed set contains Old Guard Grenadiers in campaign overalls, ready to fight for the honour of France and her Emperor.

    • 24 metal French Grenadiers of the Old Guard:
      • 4 metal command miniatures (officer, pioneer, standard bearer and drummer)

  • Napoleonic Hanoverian Line Infantry

The Duke of Wellington’s armies of the Napoleonic Wars were built from troops of all manner of nations and principalities, whom on the whole were British officered and trained, and who fought very well alongside their British comrades. The Hanoverian troops were, of course, German. They joined up in the British army to carry on the fight against Napoleon, the tyrant of the continent, when so many of their German cousins elected to fight for Bonaparte. They fought the same as British line troops in a two-deep formation, carried similar colours, and followed British drill. They wore either the Belgic shako, like their counterparts in British regiments or, as modeled here, the neat peaked forage cap which distinguished them from other units. This boxed set can be fielded as a Hanoverian Field Battalion or a Landwehr unit.

  • Napoleonic Late French Chasseurs Light Cavalry

Formed originally back in 1743, the Chasseurs a Cheval (mounted hunters) were hard riding, green clad light cavalry whose main role was patrolling and raiding for the French armies. A good Chasseur was at home on his light horse, skirmishing with the enemy cavalry or scouting enemy movements and thus providing valuable intelligence for their commanders.

Armed with carbine, curved sabre and bayonet (an item disliked by the cavalrymen who used it to dig up vegetables or ‘lost’ it on campaign) the Chasseurs were most happy in the saddle, although they were also trained to fight on foot should the need arise.

At the height of the French Army under Bonaparte’s reign there were 31 regiments of Chasseurs a Cheval although only 15 regiments were available for the titanic Hundred Days campaign that culminated at the Battle of Waterloo. Our superbly detailed Chasseurs à Cheval are provided with covered and uncovered shakos as well as the colpacks favoured by the elite companies.

Although requested not to wear the sabretache beyond 1808 many Chasseurs would keep this item well beyond this decree and thus we’ve included it on our models. For those of you wishing to follow regulations over reality simply snip the sabretache off.

This Warlord Games box set contains:

    • 12 plastic easy-build French Light Cavalry including 1 metal officer and horse

  • Napoleonic Late French Line Infantry (1812-1815)

En avant! The cry went up in hundreds of French throats as the blue columns marched forward on the battlefields across Europe. The all conquering French line infantry ‘Les Bleus’ used a combination of massed columns, fast manoeuvre, and firepower to shatter the armies of Prussia, Austria, Spain and Russia, culminating in a death struggle against Wellington and Blucher’s alliance at Waterloo in 1815.

Well led and confident of victory, the average French soldier swept almost all foes before them, living off the land as they marched. Beyond the glory of victory over their foes, there was the chance of medals, promotion to the guard, or even acknowledgement from the Emperor himself!

These Warlord Games models are dressed in greatcoats worn so often on the field of battle to save the smart uniform for the inevitable victory parade.

  • Napoleonic Portuguese Line Infantry

The Portuguese had never been fond of their Spanish neighbours. This was doubly so when in 1807 Napoleon sent a large French and Spanish army across the border to crush Portugal and take its fleet to continue their war against the detested British. Great Britain and Portugal, however, had been old allies for countless years, and before long a largely untried British general called Wellesley was sent from London to eject the French from Portuguese soil.

The Portuguese troops were brave but unskilled, and outnumbered in the early days of the conflict. Reforms of the Portuguese army taken by Sir Lt.General William Beresford changed that, adopting British drill and tactics. The changes transformed the Portuguese into an effective fighting force. The allied army was carefully organised with units of both nations mixed into divisions giving, it a distinctive character and indeed spurring on each nation to outperform the other.

  • Napoleonic Russian Line Infantry (1812-1815)

The infantry formed the backbone of all armies in the Napoleonic Wars, but no army relied more on its humble private foot soldier than that of Imperial Russia.

Brave, stubborn and resilient they had to cope with poor conditions, worse supplies and a cadre of mostly incompetent officers. Whenever western observers spent time with the Russian army they were constantly amazed by the sheer tenacity and good humour of the average Russian infantryman in the face of adversity.

Many thousands of men were pushed through the Imperial war machine to take to the fields of Europe in defiance of Napoleon. Often they were on the receiving end of awful punishment but rarely wavered. French officers were in awe of their ability to withstand artillery fire, cavalry charges and the famous French attack columns. It was said that only when you bayonetted them could you be sure you were dealing with mere men.

The Russians did seem to make use of the bayonet more often than any other army; it suited their character to get stuck in. In addition, the Russian army was usually ill-equipped and the quality of their muskets was generally inferior to that of their enemies'. Bayonets were always reliable!

Contrary to opinion it was not fear of punishment or excessive alcohol consumption that drove these men to fight on when others may have crumbled – rather an unwillingness to accept defeat.

Recruitment was never a problem for the Russian army. Many of the recruits came from an agricultural background of serfdom, little more than illiterate slaves. The army offered a steady income and regular meals. Any hardship they may suffer was an improvement for many so conscription was not usually seen as a curse. Service was for life, although this was reduced to 25 years after 1805 – effectively still a life service in all but name. Upon conscription a man would depart his village as if he were already dead, with ceremonies to that effect such were the slim hopes he would ever return.

This box set is designed to allow you to field one regiment of Russian infantry. The variants in the box allow you to field both musketeers or grenadiers along with a command section to lead them into battle. We have also provided a selection of flags from a number of regiments so you can get them into the action right away.

  • Natal Native Contingent Regiment

Largely being used as support for the Main British forces in South Africa they became the main defense force against the Zulu forces. Recruited from the local populace, mainly from the Basuto and Mponso tribes, this force excelled in dealing with Zulu due to an extensive history of fighting them.

Given mainly menial labouring jobs they eventually saw action on the front with varying results, some fighting hard and to the last man alongside their British comrades, whilst others they broke alongside the NCO's. In either case, even if they fight today or tomorrow, they will certainly fight to the last.

  • Polish Line Light Horse Lancers

The Poles have been excellent horsemen for generations and in their innumerable clashes with Russia had learned to fight the lance-armed Cossacks, equipping themselves with a 9-foot wooden lance with a wicked spear point and coloured guidon beneath the blade.

12 plastic easy-build Polish Line Light Horse Lancers.
    Additional Polish metal heads.
1 additional metal officer and metal horse.
1 optional metal arm for a bugler.
Lancers were technically light cavalry but considered themselves the equal of better-mounted troops by dint of the dispiriting lance which would outreach enemy Sabres and enable them to dispatch infantry who ran or feigned death.

These fine models in their fabulous uniforms could be fielded in a single brigade or of course placed in regular light horse brigades for added colour.

  • Polish Vistula Legion

The Vistula Legion was perhaps the most famous of the many foreign units in French service under Napoleon. Formed in Silesia in February 1807 from an infantry regiment and cavalry regiment in the service of the Kingdom of Naples, it was initially named the Legion Polacco-Italienne (Polish-Italian Legion) as it had been organised around the Poles in Italian service.

    This Battalion box set contains:

20 plastic and metal easy-build Polish Line Infantry.
4 metal command miniatures (two officers, one drummer and one sapper).
Renamed the Légion de la Vistula (Vistula Legion) in March 1808, it became three infantry regiments, each of two battalions, with each battalion having six companies of 140 men (one grenadier company, one voltigeur, and four Fusiliers), plus a Lancer regiment of 1,000 men in four squadrons.

The Vistula Legion was sent to Spain in June 1808 where it fought in numerous actions, the most celebrated of which was at Albuera in 1810, when the lancer regiment rode down a British infantry brigade, destroying three out of the four British battalions in only four minutes of slaughter.

  • Prussian Dragoons

Prussia was renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great. Less well known is the efficacy of Prussian cavalry on the European battlefield in the 19th Century. Early in the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals of the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse during the Hundred Days campaign formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers. By Waterloo there were eight dragoon units in the field, comprising 9% of the cavalry under Blücher’s control.

Alongside the cuirassiers, the dragoons were the heavy cavalry of the Prussian army. Their uniform was business-like – a distinctive blue Litewka long coat and grey overalls topped with a basic shako, frequently covered in an oilskin wrap. Armed with a curved sabre in an iron scabbard, dragoons were unusual among Prussian cavalry in the Hundred Days campaign in that they carried cavalry guidons into battles.

  • Prussian Hussars

Prussia was renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great. Less well known is the ecacy of Prussian cavalry on the european battlfield in the 19th Century Early in the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals of the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse during the Hundred Days campaign formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers on the whole with the lighter cavalry intended for raiding and skirmishing, but in reality took their place in the main battle lines during set piece battles. Hussars were ever-present in the Napoleonic wars, with twelve splendidly dressed regiments, composing 38% of all the Prussian cavalry at Waterloo. Commanded by the venerable 'Marschall Vorwärts' – Field Marshal Blücher – they were a tough nut to crack...

Prussian Hussar regiments during the Hundred Days varied in uniform. The miniatures shown here follow the traditional attire for Hussars, and are ideal for the majority of Hussars regiments during the campaign.

  • Prussian Landwehr Cavalry

Renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great, Prussia also fielded highly effective Prussian cavalry on 19th century European battlefields.

Formed in 1813, the Landwehr Cavalry was a huge force of mounted trained militia, similar in form to their infantry counterparts. The force was a massive asset to the Prussian war machine as they totalled over thirty regiments by the Hundred Days Campaign.

The Landwehr cavalry wore dark blue Litewka long coat with collars and cuffs in provincial colours. Headgear was a mix of traditional feldmutze cap and shakos – often in oilskin and with a white cross painted on. Lance pennons could vary and often reflected the uniform trim halved with white, but by the time of Waterloo all Landwehr cavalry had swapped to the standard black and white pennons.

The lance-armed Landwehr cavalry fought well on the field, comprising some 40% of Blücher’s cavalry at Waterloo – a great excuse to field lots of these brave sons of Prussia on the tabletop!

  • Prussian Landwehr Regiment 1813-1815

The Landwehr were militia formed from teenagers through to men in their forties. They were plucked from their fields, shops and offices and enrolled into the Prussian military machine to enlarge the forces that could finally depose Napoleon, the Tyrant of Europe. Prussia was a small State but her armies were well-trained and burning to avenge their past defeats.

Full with content, this box set contains:

    24 Plastic Prussian Landwehr Militia
2 Metal command (officer and drummer)
    A 4-page background guide
    11 full-colour flags
The Landwehr consisted of over sixty battalions and were equipped and trained as time and money allowed. A cheap but warm coat, comfortable cap and a musket were considered uniform enough to get thousands of troops out into the field for the restricted Prussian army of the time.

The Landwehr fought bravely in the later wars of the period, fighting hard in the 1813 campaigns and ultimately at the climax of the Hundred Days campaign that was Ligny and Waterloo.

Ill-equipped and half-trained they may have been, but after a few months hard fighting they went on to fight with determination alongside their brothers in the Prussian Line regiments.

Packed with superb detail, these plastics really capture the true nature of the Landwehr infantry, from the rugged farmers down to the youngster facing combat for the first time.

  • Prussian Uhlans

Prussia was renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great. Less well known is the efficacy of Prussian cavalry on the European battlefield in the 19th Century. Early in the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals of the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse during the Hundred Days campaign formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers on the whole with the lighter cavalry intended for raiding and skirmishing, but in reality took their place in the main battle lines during set piece battles.

The Uhlans, or lancers, of the Prussian army fulfilled the role of both skirmishing light cavalry and line shock troops alongside the dragoon and cuirassier units. Equipped with a lethal 9-foot lance, they were an imposing sight. It was the Uhlans who saved Marshall Blücher when unhorsed at Ligny.

Late war Uhlans principally wore simple dark blue uniforms and practical equipment. By the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, all units had their lance pennants with black and white swallow tail pattern.

    The Mission

At the heart of the Rorke's Drift set are the two main buildings - the storehouse and the hospital. These 4Ground laser-cut MDF buildings are capped off with laser-cut 'teddy bear fur' which acts as thatch for the roof.

The roof and upper floors lift out giving you total access to the building interiors. As you would expect from 4Ground the interiors come fully realised, they even have wall sections that pop out to simulate firing positions or broken down walls, etc.

Also included are several finely sculpted resin barricades. These are a mixture of biscuit boxes and mealie-bags, we've drawn on eye-witness accounts and expert opinion to ensure we bring you a historically accurate rendition of the battlefield.

  • Russian Line Infantry 1809-1814

Despite, or quite possibly, because of, the harsh conditions they were brought up in, the Russian soldier was stubborn, resilient and unflinching. The Russian infantryman played decisive roles in each of the great battles against the French and their allies during the Napoleonic Wars. Culminating in the great battle at Borodino, the Russian soldier proved to be a very tough opponent indeed, often performing their grim duties at the point of the bayonet.

This boxed set allows you to build a large battalion of Russians wearing the traditional Russian shako that, whilst superceded by the kiwer shako from 1812, was still worn by many regiments through to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Two different head options are included allowing you to field your unit as musketeers, grenadiers or a mixture of both.

The models are simple to put together with only three parts (body, head and backpack with sword) allowing you to build your force quickly and get it onto the tabletop fast!

  • Unmarried Zulu Impi

Usuthu! The feared Zulu warcry of 'Kill!' shouted by hundreds of brave, fierce warriors would put fear into the hearts of most men. The men shouting this battle-cry have a lot to prove as they are the unmarried warriors of the Zulu impis. Zulu tradition held that until they 'washed their spears' in the blood of an enemy of the King they could not choose a girl to marry, so closing and killing an enemy ensured a bride and a greatly enhanced status.

These young bloods moved swiftly in extended order, sniping with their selection of antique firearms or hurling long spears some 30 yards with great accuracy.

Although generally stripping down for close quarter fighting, a Zulu dressed in full regalia was an awe-inspiring sight, with monkey tails, otter fur, cow tails and crane feathers creating a look that might overwhelm a foe by looks alone.

Warlord Games give you the chance to field whole unique regiments or to field some of the more traditional units, and however you assemble and paint them they will look a brave sight on the battlefield.

  • Warlord Anglo Zulu War British Infantry

A casual look at Tommy Atkins of the Victorian period gave little away about his fighting abilities. Standing 5′ 5″ on average, and often shorter, he may or may not be able to read or write. This appearance was deceptive, however. The average British redcoat was the most dangerous animal in Africa, equipped as he was with the Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle which he was capable of firing 15 times a minute out to 1200 yards range in volley fire if needs be. His legendary discipline, his marching ability – enough to traverse all manner of terrain – and his determination to fight his enemies, which were legion, all made the British redcoat an implacable foe. Well led, well-equipped and thoroughly trained in his abilities, he blazed a trail for Empire all over the world. Cheerful and confident the redcoats of the County Regiments served their sovereign well, smashing their enemy with concentrated rifle fire and, if necessary, selling their lives dearly behind the thrust of their wicked long bayonets.
