  • British AEC III

The AEC armoured car, based on the AEC Matador lorry chassis, was developed initially as a private venture and shown to officials in 1941 during the Horse Guards Parade in London, where it made a favourable impression on Churchill. AEC's goal was to build an armoured car with firepower and protection comparable to those of contemporary tanks. The Mk II / Mk III took part in the fighting in Europe with British and Indian units, often together with the Staghound.

  • British Airborne Jeep

The British Airlanding troops had a number of heavier support weapons that were just too bulky to be moved about by their crews with any speed. To overcome this the US Jeep was used as the tow vehicle for the 6 pdr gun, M1A1 75mm pack howitzer and as a recconnaissance vehicle. It had to be lightened and modified to fit into a Horsa glider.

  • British Airborne Tetrarch Light Tank

The Tetrarch tank was originally designed as a replacement for the Light Tank Mk VI in 1938, but first saw combat during the invasion of Madagascar, supporting the invasion to retake this French colony in May 1942. The Hamilcar Glider was designed to carry the Tetrarch and during the Normandy invasions one squadron of the Airborne 6th Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment landed in 30 Hamilcar gliders on June 6, 1944 in the second wave to support the 6th Airborne Division at the River Orne. Eighteen to twenty Tetrarch tanks left Britain, a few were damaged on landing in Normandy, but the bulk went into combat supporting the Paras on the ground.

  • British Artillery HQ (NW Europe)

The key to the success of British artillery doctrine was good staff work, and whilst prewar British artillery doctrine called for precision fire aimed at destroying individual machine-gun positions with minimal expenditure of ammunition they soon learnt in the fast-moving battles of the desert getting rounds on the ground as fast as possible was more important. Response times were rapidly increased so that within minutes of a target being identified a battery could stonk a large area or concentrate everything to murder a small target. The battery staff and observers have another trick up their sleeve, the ability to call down mike target. This brings the guns of the whole regiment onto a target designated by an observer. Within a relatively short time twenty-four guns would be pounding the target as fast as the loaders could shove the rounds in the breach. The effect was dramatic, leading German prisoners to ask to see the belt-fed artillery on their way to the rear!

  • British Challenger

As more Challengers made it to the front lines, they began to provide 17pdr support in similar ways as the Sherman Firefly (one tank per troop). The Challenger was better suited to supporting the Cromwell formations than the Firefly as it was able to keep up with the Cromwell better than the slower Sherman due to the Meteor engine. Issuing the Challenger to Cromwell units also made maintenance and repair easier as they shared many of the same components. This became standard with the first Challengers being issued to Cromwell regiments in North-West Europe in August 1944.

This Flames Of War Blister Pack contains one Challenger tank.

With its usual professionalism, the British Army had prepared for war. Now, as the Soviet Army flooded across the border into West Germany, it was ready and waiting. Fox, Scorpion and Scimitar recon vehicles skirmished with the Soviet forward detachments as the Challenger and Chieftain armoured regiments waited. The infantry held the towns and woods, forcing the enemy into killing zones, new Warrior infantry fighting vehicles in fire support. If anything broke through, the airmobile troops in their Lynx helicopters would hold them. The British Army is ready.

  • British Churchill I / II

The Churchill Tank's unique look was inherited from the needs of the First World War; the tank was designed to cross shell-cratered ground and trenches, and to destroy barbed wire and parapets. In 1942, the Churchill was the heaviest armoured British tank in service and its cross-country capability was considered to be excellent. The Churchills I, II and III first saw active service at Dieppe in 1942, performing badly during the Dieppe Raid, its small road wheels and weight proving a bad combination on the loose shingle beach. Despite the bloody start to combat at Dieppe the tanks proved more successful in North Africa and a reliable design for the rest of the war.

  • British Churchill IV NA75 (Italy)

While on campaign in Tunisia a young Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer (REME) officer, Captain Percy Morrell, oversaw the scrapping of battle-damaged vehicles. During this process he noted the large numbers of Sherman 75mm guns that remained intact despite the damage to the remainder of the tank. What if these could be mounted on the Churchill? The conversion was a complete success; the Churchill actually proved a superior platform to the Sherman, the added weight of the Churchill improving accuracy, and over 200 were converted for use in Italy in this way.

Many Churchill VIIs became Crocodile flame-thrower tanks, though numbers still made it into other Churchill units as replacements, where many company and platoon commanders snatched them up as their personal chariot.

The Cromwell was the product of further development of British cruiser tanks designed to replace the Crusader. Powered by the new Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, a development of the Merlin, it had a top speed of 40mph and was considered among the fastest of tanks. Armed with the powerful OQF 75mm gun, the Cromwell gave good service in the armoured regiments until the end of the war. Due to the unavailability of the new Meteor engine, the Cromwell was initially fitted with the older Liberty engine. This combination became the Centaur IV, equipped with a 95mm howitzer. A small number of these vehicles earned the distinction of being the only Centaurs used during the D-Day landings.

By the end of July 1944 the US were running into shortages of 105mm howitzer ammunition and requested that British and Canadian forces stop using the M7 Priest. This left substantial numbers of Priests no longer in use and Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds, commander of the II Canadian Corps, devised a way of utilising these spare vehicles as troop carriers, providing transport for advancing infantry and reducing losses with armoured protection. Initially seventy-two vehicles were delivered to Army Workshops Detachment (AMD) code-named 'Kangaroo' stationed near Bayeux, stripped of the 105mm howitzer and the front aperture welded over. They could carry twelve troops with full equipment. The Defrocked Priests or Kangaroos were baptised in battle in Operation Totalise, south of Caen, and were used in action throughout the rest of the month. The crew usually consisted of the driver, with at times an added member, either an officer or NCO.
