  • Archer

This Flames of War item includes one Archer self-propelled gun with crew. The 17pdr was the most effective anti-tank weapon in the British arsenal during World War Two; but mounting a gun of this size proved challenging for design engineers. While their subsequent work would later lead to the development of the Sherman Firefly and the Challenger series of tanks, the Ministry of Supply commissioned Vickers in July 1942 to develop a self-propelled version of the 17pdr using the chassis of the Valentine.

The resulting vehicle, known as the Archer was basically a Valentine chassis fitted with an open topped superstructure mounted above the fighting compartment much like the German Marder series of tank destroyers. The 17pdr was then mounted in a unique way, pointing to the rear of the vehicle. Despite the size of the 17pdr, the final design resulted in a relatively compact vehicle with a low profile.

  • Banzai Japanese in the Pacific Flames of War Book

Banzai for Flames of War is the second book covering the Imperial Japanese forces in the Pacific. Japan’s rapid conquest of a large proportion of the Pacific and Southeast Asia came quickly after the bombing of the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. They quickly seized the Philippines from US forces, drove the British from Malaya and took most of Burma, as well as defeating the Dutch forces defending the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). This was all quickly achieved by surprise and with veteran troops with years of experience fighting in China.

Inside Banzai you will find history and background on Japan’s Pacific War, Japanese tactics, the full Japanese National special rules, and four intelligence briefings. There are also more detailed accounts of two battles, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, with background and scenario ideas for both.

  • Berlin: The Soviet Assault On The German Capital Book

In the new Flames Of War intelligence handbook, Berlin, a different approach to creating the Intelligence Briefing for the Germans has been taken. The chaotic and ad-hoc nature of the Berlin fighting led to the defence being based around the auxiliary troops like the Volkssturm, RAD (National Youth Labour Organisation), and police, reinforced by small groups of well-trained watch troops and Luftwaffe anti-aircraft gunners.

In Berlin you get just one Intelligence Briefing, but with many options. The Berlin Kampfgruppe briefing has the usual structure of Headquarters, Combat Platoons, Weapons Platoons and Support Platoons, but with many more options. As most of the Kampfgruppen (battle groups) were led by experienced officers, the Berlin Kampfgruppe HQ has two options: Heer (Army), which is rated Confident Veteran, or SS, which is rated Fearless Veteran. However, your Combat Platoons can be selected from any combination of the five different Combat Platoons available.

Within these combat platoons there are further variations. The Panzergrenadier and Fresh Panzergrenadier Platoons offers both Heer (Army) and Waffen-SS options, which are Veteran and Trained respectively. You can also field Fallschirmjäger Platoons (Fearless Trained), Hitlerjugend Platoons (Fearless Conscript), and Volkssturm Platoons (Reluctant Conscript). You can field whole companies of any of these or any mix of them you desire.

Once emplaced, the 2 pdr gun's uniquely-designed three-legged carriage allowed it a 360-degree traverse and provided excellent stability. • British A10 Cruiser Mk II

The A10 Cruiser Mk II was developed along side the A9 Cruiser tank. It was designed as an infantry tank, but its armour protection was deemed not sufficient for this role so it was reclassified as a heavy crusier tank instead. With twice as much armour as the A9, the A10 proved to be a good support tank for the armoured squadrons. The A10 went to war in France and fought though the first campaigns in North Africa in 1940-1941.

  • British A13 Cruiser Mk III

The A13 Cruiser Mk III was the first British cruiser tank to use the Christie suspension system, which gave higher speeds and better cross-country performance than the wheeled bogie suspension of the A9 and A10 cruiser tanks. However, though it was fast, it was also under-armoured and proved vulnerable to machine-gun fire on occasion. Like many of the early British tank it proved unreliable mechanically. To overcome its deficiency in armour an up-armoured version was designed and became the A13 Cruiser Mk IV. It saw action as part of the British Expeditionary Force sent to France in the 1st Armoured Division. It was well armed with the excellent 2 pdr anti-tank gun, this was able to knock out any tank the Germans dared to take them on with.

  • British A13 Mk II Cruiser Mk IV

The A13 Mk II Cruiser Mk IV was in essence an up-armoured version of the A13 Cruiser Mk III. This increase was mainly added to the frontal armour of the tank, and despite the increase in weight due to the extra armour mobility was not affected due to the high power-to-weight ratio of the basic design. The most distinctive feature of the A13 Mk II Cruiser Mk IV was the V-section armour on the turret sides. This 'spaced armour' was later used by the German tank designers and made it easy to distinguish between an A13 Mk II Cruiser Mk IV and an A13 Cruiser Mk III.

  • British AEC I

The AEC armoured car, based on the AEC Matador lorry chassis, was developed initially as a private venture and shown to officials in 1941 during the Horse Guards Parade in London, where it made a favourable impression on Churchill. AEC's goal was to build an armoured car with firepower and protection comparable to those of contemporary tanks. The first version carried a Valentine Mk II turret with a 2 pdr gun, and subsequent versions received more powerful armament, either a 6 pdr or a 75mm gun. The vehicle also carried two machine guns. The Mk I was first used in combat in the North African campaign late in 1942, where a few vehicles were reportedly fitted with a Crusader tank turret mounting a 6 pdr gun. The Mk II / Mk III took part in the fighting in Europe with British and Indian units, often together with the Staghound.
