Sottotenente Luigi Pascucci of the famous Ariete division led the heroic last ditch counter attack at Fuka with eleven of his company that allowed much of the German Afrikakorps to escape after the Second Battle of Alamein. He was found after the battle lying in his burnt out tank, and for his supreme sacrifice he was awarded the Medaglia D'Oro Al Valore Militare, the Gold Medal for Military Valour, Italy's highest award.
