Armed with the 45mm Brixia modello 35, the Light Mortar Platoons provided covering fire for the Fucilieri right up to the point of assault. Unlike machine-guns and medium mortars, the Brixia fired its small grenades over the attacking infantry, allowing it to keep firing until the last few seconds before the assault.
