The SdKfz 9 or 'Famo' after the manufacturer (Fahrzeug und Motorenbau GmbH) was the standard German tank recovery vehicle and this giant eighteen-tonne half-track was also used for towing artillery and troop transport. Despite its substantial power, recovery of Tiger or Panther tanks required three Famos linked with tow cables to handle the massive bulk of the big Panzers. It could also be used for transporting medium tanks in combination with the 22-ton SdAh 116 trailer. A wrecker version with a six-ton crane, the SdKfz 9/1, was also produced.
