The SdKfz 250 Leichte Schutzenpanzerwagen was a light armoured half-track built by the Demag firm from 1941 onwards and used in a wide variety of roles throughout the war. The rough terrain of the vast Russian steppes proved challenging for the four-wheeled SdKfz 222 armoured car, so in March 1942 it was suggested that the small SdKfz 250 half-track might be a better choice for the reconnaissance role. Three prototype vehicles of the SdKfz 250/9 design were sent to Russia and immediately proved far more capable of coping with the extensive cross-country distances encountered than wheeled vehicles. In May 1943 production of the SdKfz 250/9 'Armoured Car' began. The turret, complete with 2cm KwK38 and MG34 from the SdKfz 222 armoured car, was transplanted onto a new armoured roof.
