Thirteen members of the 5. SS-Panzerregiment of the Wiking SS-Panzerdivision were awarded the Knight's Cross. Though individual kill numbers are not available, Obersturmfuhrer Senghas led them with over thirty armoured kills. The division's first Panzerabteilung (tank battalion) was formed in early 1942 when Wiking was upgraded to a Panzergrenadier- division. The cadre of these Panzer Kanonen (Panzer Aces) began then and stayed with the division throughout the war. Nearly all of these Panzer Kanonen survived the war, despite the regiment suffering severe casualties in fighting the Soviets across Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, and Hungary.
