The Panzerkampfwagen II was intended to be a stop-gap measure until the sufficient numbers of the Panzer III and IV could be delivered to units in the field. Armed with a 2cm main gun that was considered adequate for the time, the Panzerkampfwagen II was considered a main battle tank intended for tank-on-tank engagements for the Polish campaign but was relegated to a reconnaissance role during the campaign in the west. Its reconnaissance role was maintained during the invasion of the Soviet Union but by 1942 its use as a frontline vehicle begun to be phased out.
