In the free-flowing desert battles it was useful to allocate sections of heavy weapons such as the MG34 heavy machine-gun and the 8cm GW34 Mortar to each company. The company's heavy platoon then formed a base of fire for the Panzergrenadier's attacks and a strongpoint for their defence.
