During the war the Heer used many types of truck but the three-tonne Opel Type 3, 6-36 S 'Blitz' was the most famous of all their vehicles. With over a hundred thousand built, these trucks - with the Blitz's characteristic lightning emblem on the radiator front panel - became symbolic of Germany's conquests. The trucks that went into combat with Graebner's assault on Arnhem Bridge were reinforced with sandbags, 55-gallon drums filled with sand and grain and anything else that would offer the slightest bit of protection for the troops inside. Though improvised, the troops were relatively safe from enemy small-arms fire.
