The Typhoon made a name for itself as the Allies' premier ground-attack aircraft during D-Day and the following operations in Normandy. Freed from the interceptor role by the new Hawker Tempest, eighteen of the RAF's twenty Typhoon squadrons were allocated to the 2nd Tactical Air Force. They destroyed the German radar net in Normandy in the days before D-Day and provided tactical support once the battle was joined, hunting out the German armoured forces.
